Anyone else missing The Last Dance? For the last month, we’ve been tuning in every Sunday night to get more insight into the most iconic figure in sports. But did you know MJ was initially afraid the doc would hurt his image?
Michael Jordan is an incredible branding study. Most know him as a clean cut, self-motivated, fierce competitor with a killer instinct and unmatched desire to win.
Thanks to Space Jam, 90’s kids like me also associate MJ with Bugs Bunny — one of the most lovable characters in Pop Culture history. This carefully crafted image is all by design.
Branding isn’t just about your colors or logo. It’s about what people know you for. The values you represent, and people’s ability to relate to them. So when we find out that our clean cut, lovable winner could be a jerk sometimes, it may come as a shock to our system. Believe it or not, it could even turn some people away.
What are your brand values? How do you communicate them? How do you want to be known in the minds of your potential customers? Do you know your brand well enough to know what opportunities to stay away from?
Just a little food for thought.
